Visa and Passport

Indonesia allows visa free entry to the citizens of 169 countries as of July 2016. The nationals of these countries who are going on holiday, attending conventions or engaging in similar such activities are allowed to stay in Indonesia of up to 30 days without a visa. This type of visa cannot be extended, transferred or converted to any other kind of visa; nor can it be used as a working permit. Those visitors eligible under the visa waiver program have a visa issued at the Indonesian border checkpoints with that issuance subject to the discretion of the visa officer. The visa is not for employment and is not extendable. However, it’s worth checking beforehand as Indonesian visa regulations are prone to change.

Visas on arrival are available to passport holders of most countries, including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and European Union. Tourist visas cost $25 and are valid for 30 days. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of arrival, and you need a ticket out of Indonesia. Bring $25 in cash to speed the process. Visa renewal for 30 days more costs another $25, but it’s worth paying your hotel or a visa agency as much as Rp350,000 additional to do the legwork. The process takes up to a week.
